Where can I put a chandelier?

Chandeliers feature many sizes and designs, including rectangular, crystal, beaded, and chrome chandeliers. This variety makes them great focal point for any space. For instance, a large crystal chandelier light can hang in foyers and dining rooms while small chandeliers can hang above kitchen islands and bathtubs. As long as you have proper wiring and ceiling support, chandelier lighting can be added as a great lighting accent for any style.

How do I know if my ceiling is strong enough to support a chandelier?

Most electrical boxes can only support up to 50 pounds of weight. If your chandelier weighs more than this, you will need to install reinforcements, such as braces and mounts. Braces come in different materials including metal, plastic, and wood; wood braces can be cut to custom-fit your space and provide the best support.

Can I install a chandelier by myself?

Yes, but with caution. Most household wiring is color-coded and corresponds with the instructions for chandelier installation. However, you will need to shut off the main power source and use a wire tester to ensure safety and to check that everything is functioning before you install. To avoid danger, it is best to hire an electrician.

Can I replace my current ceiling light with a chandelier?

Yes. Wiring for ceiling lights and chandeliers are compatible, and you will not require new wiring. Ceiling lights do not weigh as much as most chandeliers, so you will most likely need to install a brace to support the extra weight of the chandelier.

Can I install a chandelier where there is currently no light fixture?

Yes, but this will require a costly installation process. You will need an electrician to install a junction box and connect it to the electrical wiring of your home as well as provide reinforcements to support the added weight of the chandelier.

How large should my chandelier be?

  • For a room: Measure the length and width of the room in square feet. Add these numbers together and the sum will equal the desired diameter of the chandelier in inches. For instance, in a room that is 10 feet by 15 feet, the chandelier should be 25 inches in diameter
  • To hang over a table, counter, or bathtub: When coordinating a chandelier with another centerpiece, it is best to follow the 1/3 rule. Light sources typically should be no more than 1/3 the size of the centerpiece. For example, if a dining room table is 12 feet long, the chandelier should be no more than 4 feet in diameter.

How tall should my chandelier be?

The height of the chandelier and the length of its chain will depend on each room and style. Here are a few guidelines for the most typical chandelier locations:

  • Foyer: Measuring from the bottom, the chandelier should hang 7 feet above the floor.
  • Dining room: Measuring from the bottom, the chandelier should be about five feet from the ground. This is best for viewing the dining room light fixture while standing and sitting. You can also measure about 30 inches from the top of the table to the bottom of the chandelier to find the best height for the dining room light.
  • Rooms with high ceilings: For ceilings that are more than 9 feet tall, take advantage of the vertical space and install a multi-tiered chandelier. This will allow for a more opulent chandelier and will reduce the length of the chain to better fill the room.

What light bulbs do I need for my chandelier?

Size and shape of light bulbs will vary based on the chandelier. With that said, we highly recommend that you use LED light bulbs. LEDs come in many shapes to fit the aesthetic of your chandelier, including flame bulbs and candelabra bulbs.

You can determine the size of the bulb needed based on the letter and number labeled on the chandelier. Usually, household light bulbs are sized with an E12 or E26 base, and the majority of chandeliers are designed with this in mind.

Moreover, most LEDs share the same base as incandescent bulbs and last for 10 times longer. This will reduce the need for light bulb changes, which is especially important for chandeliers that are difficult to reach.

How can I change the lighting aesthetic of my chandelier?

To control the light output, you can install a dimmer switch. A dimmer switch allows you to change the light intensity, perfect for dining rooms and bedrooms. Dimmer switches also extend the life of light bulbs by reducing the energy flow to the power source. This will save money on electricity and reduce maintenance.
