What is a downlight?
Downlights, also known as recessed lights or can lights, typically mount to the ceiling and direct light downwards, but they can also mount to the floor or wall to direct light upwards or outwards. They include the can, or housing, and trim. The can holds the light source, mounting, and electrical parts and recesses into the ceiling.
The trim refers to the visible part of the light and comes in many different shapes and sizes to match the décor of your space. It adds aesthetic and, in some types, such as gimbal lights, it helps direct the beam. Downlights commonly see use in both indoor and outdoor lighting applications, including ceilings, cabinets, shelving, landscape lights, and patios.
