What is a filament bulb?

Traditional incandescent bulbs use a filament, often tungsten or carbon filaments, to help convert electricity into light. An electric current passes through the filament and heats it to a temperature hot enough to produce light. This means these bulbs produce light by generating heat.

LED filament lamps, also known as Edison bulbs or vintage bulbs, use light emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged to appear similar to an incandescent filament. However, these bulbs use energy efficient LED technology, which means they produce very little heat.

Filament bulbs provide atmosphere to a variety of places. They often see use in chandeliers, homes, and restaurants. You can often find string lights available with outdoor rated LED filament bulbs to provide a stylish ambiance to outdoor spaces.

What is the difference between LED and LED filament bulbs?

The difference between a standard LED bulb and an LED filament bulb lies in the positioning of the LEDs. In standard LED bulbs, you typically cannot see the aspects of the bulb that emit the light.

LED filament bulbs feature a visible internal filament. This creates a vintage appearance in the bulbs. However, instead of a single filament, LED options typically contain around four filaments to provide the right amount of light.

Is E12 the same as a candelabra base?

An E12 base, also known as a candelabra base, functions as a type of screw-based bulb. The ‘E’ stands for Edison and typically refers to screw-in bases. The ‘12’ indicates the diameter of the base in millimeters. E12 bases measure around 12 millimeters in diameter. They often see use with chandelier or candelabra bulbs but may also see use in wall sconces, lanterns, and more.
