PAR stands for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector and produces a more concentrated beam of light than traditional incandescent bulbs. They include a lamp, reflector, and lens inside the bulb. The number following PAR refers to the diameter of the bulb measured in eighths of an inch. A PAR30 bulb measures 30/8 or 3.75 inches.
Because they provide directional light, consider the correct beam angle for the space you intend to use it. Keep in mind, the size of the PAR bulb does not necessarily correlate to the beam angle. PAR bulbs provide beam angles ranging from very narrow spot to very wide flood beams. Though each manufacturer may define them differently, a narrow beam helps highlight a single item or specific location while a wide flood beam covers a wide area. Narrow beams, or spotlights, usually appear no larger than 45 degrees. Floodlights often offer a beam spread up to 120 degrees.
They often see use in track lighting, recessed lighting, museum displays, retail stores, outdoor lighting, and more.

Often interchangeable, both BR and PAR bulbs offer a similar lighting option. BR stands for Bulged Reflector and includes a reflector inside the housing. This creates a slightly bulging shape near the neck of the bulb.
BR lights often see use in recessed lighting on stairways or in rooms with high ceilings. BR bulbs often work best in areas that require the light to cover a broad area while PAR bulbs provide a more directional, spotlight beam.
