What is a relocatable power tap?

Relocatable power taps (RPT), also called power strips or multi-plug adapters, offer a multiple outlet extension for a single branch circuit. They allow multiple electronic devices to receive power from one outlet. They function similarly to extension cords and typically work indoors only.

The Underwriters Laboratory (UL) also adds that RPTs should offer a 250 V AC or less rating, feature 20 amps or less, and may only use temporary mounting means when they provide mounting.

What is the difference between a relocatable power tap and surge protector?

Surge protectors and surge suppressors protect your electrical equipment against surges in power. Power taps typically cannot protect against a surge in power. You should not daisy chain surge protectors or power taps as it could pose a fire hazard and goes against electrical codes.

Additionally, power taps and surge protectors must meet or comply with different UL standards. Relocatable power taps are often listed under the standard UL 1363. Special purpose relocatable power taps should comply with UL 1363a to see use in patient care areas of health care facilities. Surge protectors should meet UL 1449, the UL Standard for Surge Protective Devices.
