How to clean home air ducts?

To clean your home air duct, you can either clean it yourself or hire a professional duct cleaner. If you are cleaning the air duct yourself, follow the steps below.

  1. Turn off the HVAC system and ensure the heating and cooling is off.
  2. Remove and clean the grilles with a wet microfiber cloth. If there are stains, you can mix dish soap with water to help remove them.
  3. Cover the supply air vents with paper towels so they do not become dusty when you clean the other vents.
  4. Turn the “Fan Only” function on through the thermostat. Make sure the “Heat” and “Cool” modes are off when turning on the fan.
  5. Use a vent cleaning brush to remove the debris in the supply duct.
  6. Then, use a vacuum to remove most of the debris and dust buildup.
  7. After vacuuming, replace the air filters to keep the indoor air clean.
  8. Place the grilles and vent covers back where they came from.
  9. Reset the thermostat to the temperature of your liking.

If you want professionals to clean your ducts, you can hire them around the beginning of spring or fall. You can also call them if you have remodeled the home or if you suspect mold.

What are dampers in HVAC?

Dampers are valves or metal plates that regulate the airflow in a building’s HVAC system. They work by slowly opening and closing to control the airflow. They help to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the building. They are normally found in the main HVAC trunk line right before junction points with smaller supply ducts. Most dampers work with zoned HVAC systems to adjust airflow to specific zones.
