How to replace a bathroom exhaust fan?

HomElectrical advises against doing DIY projects to prevent injury or incorrectly installing an item.

If you do want to replace a bathroom exhaust fan, hire a professional to complete the replacement and installation. Below are the steps they will take to replace the bathroom exhaust fan.

  • First, the expert will gather all the tools necessary for the replacement. Once they have the tools, they will determine the fan size. This is so they do not have to cut so much of the wall.
  • Then, they will turn off the circuit breaker to the location of the exhaust fan.
  • Once the breaker is off, they will remove the old exhaust fan from the wall. They also need to remove the exhaust fan from the duct in the wall. The expert will also disconnect the wires from the old fan as well.
  • After the old fan is completely disconnected, the expert will adjust the wall to accommodate the new exhaust fan.
  • Then, they attach the new fan to the ductwork in the ceiling and connect the wiring. Once everything is connected, they place the fan in the housing of the wall and secure the screws into place.
  • The technician places the cover over the fan and tests if the fan works by turning on the circuit breaker.

How to clean a bathroom exhaust fan?

Cleaning a bathroom fan is quite simple. Below are simple steps you can take to clean your bathroom exhaust fan in a short amount of time.

  1. Turn off the fan. For extra safety, you can also turn the power to the fan off at the circuit breaker.
  2. Remove the fan cover. Do this by gently pulling down on the cover and feel around for the mounting tabs or wires on either side.
  3. Clean the cover: Clean covers without lights in warm water and a small mix of dishwashing soap. Make sure to wash it thoroughly and that it completely dries before placing it back in the ceiling.
  4. Vacuum the fan without removing the motor. Try to gently remove as much dust as possible.
  5. Dust the fan and the housing with a microfiber cloth. This helps to remove smaller dust particles the vacuum could not.
