When to use green or red exit sign?
Check with the rules in your area when choosing between green or red exit signs. Most states and cities have different rules you must follow when installing exit signs. However, only five states require specific colors. South Carolina, Rhode Island, and Illinois require red exit signs, while Maryland and Utah require green exit signs.
Some areas are leaning towards using green lettering exit signs. Exit signs with red lettering are dropping in popularity because red usually means “stop”. Red lettering is also less visible than green lettering from a distance.
Where are exit signs required?
Exit signs are required to be visible from all directions of paths of egress travel. The path of egress travel must be marked by visible exit signs to indicate the direction of egress. This is important to show people where they can escape if they cannot immediately find their way out. Exit signs should be placed at least 100 feet from the exit passageway.
