How to install surface mounted LED Panel light?
HomElectrical does not encourage DIY installations. Please consult a licensed electrician to complete the installation. Below are the steps they should take to complete the installation.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the original clips from the panel light. Then, install four clasps on the panel light and screw them into place with the screws that were provided.
- Remove the screws on the junction box. Once the screws are removed, take off the box to access the LED driver.
- Connect the hot, neutral and ground wire to the female connector terminal.
- Thread the wires through the side of the junction box. After threading the wires through, put the cover back on the box and screw it into place.
- Turn the power off to the ceiling light. When the power is off, put the hot, neutral, and ground wires from the wall junction box into the male connector terminal.
- Install two screws on each side of the junction box. Insert the connector plate on top of the screws.
- Then install the surface mount kit on the connector plate and rotate the cage. Make sure the screws are secure to hold the kit firmly in place.
- Add additional screws to each corner of the mounting kit to support the LED panel.
- Pull down the male connector terminal from the ceiling and connect it to the female connector terminal from the panel light.
- Mount the panel light to the surface mounted kit and turn the power on to see if the panel works.
If everything works, this completes the installation!
What is the difference between a surface and flange mount kit?
Surface mounting kits attach directly to the surface and protrude from it. The kit normally consists of brackets, screws or other items to firmly secure the light into place.
Flange mounting kits, on the other hand, help to make LED panels level with the surface, creating a flush appearance. Flange mounts aren’t fastened directly to the surface. Instead, a flange separates the fixture from the ceiling. Using this kit requires you to cut into the surface to create a recess where a device will sit.
In short, surface mount kits are mounted on top of a surface. Flange mounting is recessed into the surface and is not exposed.
