What is a control transformer?

Control transformers are transformers that are designed to control voltage levels in control circuits. Control transformers lower higher voltages to a more manageable voltage that is better suited for powering control devices. Control types are mostly found in HVAC systems, manufacturing machines, and motor controls.

The following are some of the control transformers HomElectrical offers:

  • Imperator Encapsulated Control Transformer
  • Fusion Enclosed Transformer
  • Spartan Open Transformer
  • Q Series Encapsulated Control Transformer

How to test a control transformer?

To test a control transformer, hire a licensed electrician to help test the transformer. Below are the steps they will take to test the control transformer.

  1. Locate the control transformer station panel. Disconnect all leads except the ground leads.
  2. Perform the electrical safety check.
  3. Then, locate the digital multimeter and measure the resistance.
  4. Once the resistance is measured, check the primary for an open.
  5. Make sure to measure and record primary and secondary connections.
  6. Then, rotate the function selector switch on the digital multimeter to the OFF position and remove the test probes.
