What is a harmonic filter?

A harmonic filter is an electrical unit that eliminates harmonic distortion. Harmonic distortions typically happen from an excess number of currents in and out of appliances. These filters are best for reducing larger quantities of harmonics damaging equipment. They are typically made of a variety of resistors, inductors and capacitors that deflect harmonic currents.

How do harmonic filters work?

Harmonic filters work by allowing a path to Earth for harmonic currents. The path allows for harmonic currents to bypass electrical equipment, which reduces the amount of harmonic distortion in the system. Harmonic filters can be passive or active. Passive filters provide a low-impedance path to the ground. Active filters tend to generate currents that cancel the harmonic current. Active filters are likely to be more expensive than passive filters but are more effective at reducing harmonic distortion.
