What is a line reactor?

A line reactor is a variable frequency drive (VFD) accessory that forms a magnetic field as current flows through it. The magnetic field that is created limits the rise of the current helping to reduce the harmonics and protect the drive from power surges. There are two types of reactors, AC and DC. Both limit harmonic currents but AC line reactors protect the entire VFD.

Are line reactors good for VFD?

Yes, line reactors are good for VFD because they protect the variable frequency drive from utility power line disturbances. They are also good for reducing the harmonics the VFD generates back into the utility grid. The line reactors need to be used in certain situations. These situations include:

  • The input voltage where disturbances can occur.
  • Where harmonic distortion is a concern.
  • Where the supply line power capacity is much higher than the VFD system.
