What is a fire pit?

A fire pit houses a fire and prevents it from spreading. Their designs can range from a simple hole dug in the ground to an elaborate fuel-burning structure.

A backyard fire pit gives you and your loved ones a comfortable place to gather around a fire while enjoying the outdoors. They come in a variety of styles and fuel choices so you can find one that works best in your space. They also come in different types, like the traditional fire pit or the decorative and functional fire pit table.

A fire table features a unique table-like design with a fire pit in the center. They provide a comfortable focal point, warmth, light, and a place to set things down. You can often find gas fire pit tables that use liquid propane (LP) as a fuel source but natural gas and wood-burning fire pits also exist.

What are the benefits of a fire pit table?

Many fire pit tables use propane gas as a fuel source, but you may find natural gas or wood-burning fire pit tables as well. Natural gas typically needs to connect to a natural gas line while LP gas fire pit options use an LP tank. Liquid propane gas fire pit options typically store the tank beneath the table.

These easy-to-use fire tables add ambience and style to your space. Sure to start a conversation, these stylish and luxurious designs create a place for your friends and loved ones to spend time and chat. They often include decorative media like lava rocks or fire glass beads, adding personality and decoration to a gas fire table. You cannot use gas fire pits and media with a wood-burning fire as they are not designed for wood fires.

You can find a variety of fire tables ranging from stylish and elegant to sleek and modern. Choose from a selection of fire pits like this 28-inch Anderson outdoor gas fire pit which supplies 50,000 BTUs and a stylish steel base. You can also find unique designs like this 40-inch Americana fire pit which offers a 40,000 BTU option. It features a UV printed faux wood mantel and a steel base with a bronze finish.

Do fire pit tables give off heat?

Fire gives off radiant heat, meaning they warm a person or object instead of the air itself. A gas fire pit table gives off heat, though how much can depend on the type of gas used. You can measure heat output using BTUs, or British Thermal Units. BTUs measure the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Many firepit tables give off around 50,000 BTU/hr., but you can find a variety of BTU options. We carry models that range from 30,000-50,000 BTU/hr.

  • Natural gas fire tables require more fuel to reach the same BTU levels as propane and they must connect to a natural gas line. They typically cost more than a propane unit due to their installation. However, in many areas, natural gas runs cheaper than propane.
  • A liquid propane fire table uses less propane to achieve the same amount of BTUs as natural gas. Propane fire pits typically use a propane tank to provide fuel. They offer more portability since they don’t need to connect to a dedicated gas line. However, propane can run more expensive than natural gas.

Endless Summer offers DualHeat fire pit tables that combine a fire pit with an infrared patio heater for even more warmth. You can use these fire pit tables in four ways:

  • Fire pit
  • Patio heater
  • Fire pit and patio heater
  • Table only

Are wood-burning fire pits good?

If you like the sound of a crackling fire and the smell of smoke, a wood-burning fire pit might be for you. Wood-burning fire pits also give your friends and loved ones a warm place to gather and toast some marshmallows. They typically require only a little maintenance and you can find options that include a mesh spark screen, like this 30-in fire pit, to boost their safety.

They need firewood and require that you frequently remove the ash, which can create a hassle. Additionally, you cannot use every type of wood to fuel the fire. Certain woods, like construction wood or freshly cut greenwood, release harmful chemicals in the air when burned or are nearly impossible to light. Instead, use dry wood to get the fire going. Hardwoods, like oak, provide a steady, long-lasting burn. Softwood offers an easy-to-light and affordable option, but burns quicker than hardwood, so you may need more of it.

Additionally, you may need a permit to use a fire pit in certain areas. Check with local codes and follow safe practices. Avoid using a fire pit on windy days and avoid using flammable liquids, like gasoline or lighter fluid, to light the fire. Keep children and pets away from the fire.

What other options does HomElectrical carry?

You can find a wide variety of fire pit options, like this portable outdoor gas fire pit that uses a standard LP tank and includes a regulator hose. To add a unique aspect to your outdoor areas, choose stylish fire columns! We carry both large and small fire columns available in slate and black color finishes. You can find 15-inch and 28-inch slate or 14.9-inch and 27.6-inch black fire columns to add to your décor.

The firehouse offers a unique look and uses a chimney to direct smoke up and away so you can avoid dealing with smoke. This option also includes a slide-out cooking surface so you can enjoy it in more ways than one.

Additionally, add fire to your tabletop with the tabletop Citronella fire bowl! This decorative addition uses a glass windshield to help protect the flame while bringing style and elegance to your table.

What safety precautions should I take?

While not a comprehensive list, here are some safety precautions to consider when using a fire pit or fire pit table.

Place fire pits and tables at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface. Keep them clear of hanging trees, brush, branches, or other flammable materials. Only use a fire pit outdoors and never leave the fire unattended. Never use them on a wooden deck as this can pose a risk.

When using a fire table, never store spare tanks beneath the table and never use or store LP tanks indoors. If you choose to store the fire table indoors, disconnect the tank and store it in a well-ventilated, outdoor location.

If you need a place to store an LP tank, Endless Summer offers a tank cover, or tank holder, for storage.
