PAR stands for “Parabolic Aluminized Reflector”. PAR bulbs use a reflector designed for focused directional lighting. Compared to other bulbs, PAR bulbs have a narrower beam angle. Use PAR bulbs for spot lighting in recessed lights, track lights, and landscape fixtures. PAR bulbs have soft light which means they can make shadows depending on where they are. They also have a smaller diameter and typically spread light at 45 degrees or lower.
The main difference between the PAR30 and PAR38 is the size of the diameter. The PAR30 has a diameter of 3.75 inches while the PAR38 has a diameter of 4.75 inches.
PAR30 bulbs are typically found indoors and used with multiple light fixtures. Short neck PAR30 bulbs are common for track lighting while long neck PAR30 bulbs are useful for recessed cans.
PAR38 bulbs are used for outdoor lighting. These lights can be used as flood and safety lights. They are perfect for reaching farther light in certain spaces.
