Is a ballast required with LED corn bulbs?

No. Before installing an LED corn bulb, you must remove the ballast from the existing light fixture. You can also perform a ballast bypass which can be a bit more daunting. Most metal halide and high pressure sodium lights are powered by a magnetic or electronic ballast. For these bulbs, you will need to remove the ballast and wire it directly to to the light. We recommend contacting a licenced professional before attempting any electrical work.

Are LED corn bulbs easily retrofitted into current fixtures?

If your'e interested in switching to LED, corn light bulbs are a quick and easy solution. You have two options when converting to LED lighting:

  1. Replace your existing light fixture. This is a good option when considering long term application, but can be more costly.
  2. Retrofitting your current fixtures. This option is a simple solution, but may require you to remove the ballast in your existing fixture depending on the type of light you are replacing (ie. MH, HPS, CFL, HID, etc.)

What does it mean if the bulb has direct line voltage?

Light bulbs that require a direct line voltage to power them don't need an exernal power supply. These lights have a quick and easy installation, and dont require a transformer. These light fixtures are often referred to as plug-and-play.  Line voltage is the standard 120 volts -- that's found in circuit boxes and outlets.  Low voltage lighting, on the other hand generally uses 12 or 24 volts and requires a transformer. Always be sure to determine the maximum amperage for your ciruit to determine the amount of lights that you're  allowed to run on one circuit.

Are all corn bulbs omnidirectional (have a 360 beam angle)?

Yes LED corn bulbs provide an even bright white light and are omnidirectional. Omnidirectional bulbs cover a 360° angle, helping them to provide an even light consistency. These lights are great for general lighting, however, they are not recommended for spot lighting, such as in landscape lighting applications.
