Do I need to use the bulb differently if it has an external driver?

Never overload your circuit! External drivers will not effect the LED bulb, but you should always be sure to pair the corn light with a LED driver that uses 80% of their maximum rated wattage. Figure out which LED driver you need for your light fixtures on our blog!

What is a Mogul base?

Also referred to as a E39 base, the screw-in mogul base is the largest of all the Edison bases. Mogul bases are made of cast porcelain which allows them to withstand very high temperatures. Commonly used in commercial and industrial light fixtures, mogul base light bulbs measure to 39 millimeters. Read more about corn bulb bases on our blog!

Do LED corn bulbs need to be used in certain fixtures?

LED corn bulbs are suitable for any enclosed fixtures that traditionally use high intensity discharged lights. Corn bulbs can replace HID lamps up to 1000 Watts with a fraction of the energy consumption. The most common fixtures corn lights are found in are the following:

  • Post top light fixtures
  • Bollard light fixtures
  • Outdoor teardrop light fixtures
  • High bay fixtures
  • Low bay fixtures

When retrofitting your current fixtures with LED corn bulbs, you must either remove or bypass the ballast.

What is a medium base?

An E26 or medium screw-in base is the most common bulb base in the U.S. This socket is found in most standard household light bulbs, and used in most incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, CFL, and HID lamps. Larger bulbs will normally have a mogul base. These bulbs generally have a much higher wattage, and are used in outdoor lighting applications, such as street lamps, post top lights, etc. Learn more with our Light Bulb Fitting Guide: Light Bulb Bases and Socket Types.
