Rope lights consist of a cylindrical tube more similar to a rope than a flat tape light. They house strings of either LED or incandescent lights. Made of a clear material, this allows the lights to appear like they glow or twinkle. Rope lights work well for decorative lighting because they emit minimal light output. They typically use 12V or 120V.
Strip lights, also called tape lights or ribbon lights, consist of LEDs mounted on flat circuit boards. They feature an adhesive backing that allows them to surface mount almost anywhere. You can find many Smart strip lights that offer color changing abilities such as RGB color options or tunable white, which changes the color temperature of the white light. To control them, they connect to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Use these lights to create colorful accent or task lighting. You can also cut LED strip lights to certain lengths to fit the parameters of your space while you typically cannot cut rope lights.

Strip lights work well to provide task lighting or accent lighting. Because of their flat design and adhesive backing, LED tape lights can work in a variety of locations. A very versatile lighting solution, they can work in places such as under kitchen cabinets, replacing ceiling fluorescents, lighting small projects for hobbies, in living rooms, or lighting a large conference room! For the best optimal uses, you can control them using wireless dimming systems, DMX controllers, and wall switches.
Strip lights come in a variety of sizes, with some options ranging up to 100 feet in length. You can buy different lengths of strip lights and, from there, cut them to the length needed.
They have a long lifespan with an average rated life of 30,000 hours! Many LED strip lights can dim, which also helps them last longer. Find tape lights rated for indoor and outdoor use or buy bright neon lights to decorate any space.
Though they come in set sizes, you can cut LED strip lights down to the size you need. They come in one long strip but provide a line to indicate where you can cut them. If done properly, cutting the strip light does not cause harm. From there, you can mount the LED strip to whatever surface you need.
However, you cannot cut all strip lights. Waterproof options may not allow you to cut them to size as it can void the waterproof rating.
