What is an A19 bulb?

A19 bulbs are standard screw in bulbs designed to be the direct replacement to your existing incandescent and CFL bulbs. Providing the same brightness at a fraction of the energy consumption as your old incandescent bulb, A19 bulbs are the cost-effective alternative. These bulbs feature a variety of color temperatures for any of your lighting needs.

What is a beam angle?

The beam angle of an LED bulb is the angular dimension of the cone of light from the lamp. It encompasses the central part of the beam out to the angle where the intensity is 50 percent of maximum.

The beam angle of an LED bulb

For most household ceiling fitted applications, a beam angle of 30 or 40 degrees would be sufficient. For outdoor applications, a wider beam angle of 60 to 120 degrees is preferred to cover a larger surface area.

What color temperature do I need?

Color temperatures range from warm white to cool white.

  • 2700K - 3000K – provides an ambient, intimate, and personal mood with its warm white light that is ideal for living rooms, family rooms, and hospitality environments.
  • 3500K - 4100K – provides a clean and efficient neutral white light that is ideal for kitchen, bath, garage or commercial applications.
  • 5000K - 6500K -  provides a vibrant and alert cool white light that is ideal for commercial, industrial, and institutional applications.

What is the difference between Directional and Omni-Directional?

  • Directional bulbs are typically used for recessed cans or any place where a directional light source is needed.
  • Directional bulbs feature a 180 degree beam angle so no light is wasted.
  • Omni-Directional LED A19 bulbs allow for light to go in all directions with a 300 degree beam angle.
  • Omni-Directional LED Bulbs are perfect for table lamps utilizing a lamp shade.

What wattage equivalent do I need?

LEDs (Watts) CFLs (Watts)
4-5 8-12
6-8 13-18
9-11 18-22
12-14 23-31
15-22 32-54

What incandescent bulbs do A19 bulbs replace?

A19 LED bulbs can easily replace a 40W or 60W incandescent bulb.

For example:

  • A 7W A19 LED bulb will replace a 40W incandescent, with a lumen output ranging from 400-500 lumens.
  • A 10W A19 LED bulb will replace a 60W incandescent, with a lumen output ranging from 800-900 lumens.

A good rule of thumb to figure out your LED replacement is to look at the lumens (desired brightness), and find a bulb that works accordingly.

What's the difference between an A19 and an A21 bulb?

The main difference between an A19 and A21 bulb is the size and shape of the bulb. A19 bulbs are the standard shaped bulb for household lamps and light fixtures. These bulbs are 2.375 inches in diameter and 4.13 inches in height. An A21 bulb on the other hand is 2.625 inches in diameter and 5 inches in height. Both bulbs have a standard medium (E26) screw-in base, but A21 bulbs typically have a longer neck so make sure this type of bulb will fit in your fixture. A-shape bulbs will typically produce a lumen output between 400-800 lumens.

Is an E26 and A19 bulb the same? Which one is better and why?

E26 refers to the size of the bulb’s base, while A19 refers to the type of bulb. Light bulbs with an E26 base will have a standard medium screw-in base, and can be used in several standard household lamps with that size socket. A19 bulbs are your standard LED bulbs measuring at 2.375” (diameter) x 4.13” (height). Before purchasing an A19 bulb, make sure that the base and dimensions will fit into your existing light fixture.
