How does a geothermal heat pump work?

While air-source heat pumps exchange heat with the air, geothermal heat pump systems exchange heat with the ground using the a refrigeration process. The air temperature outdoors varies greatly according to the time of day and the season, but a few feet under the ground, the temperature stays at a constant temperature of 57-70 degrees Fahrenheit. This simplifies the exchange process since geothermal systems use heat energy that already exists, unlike air source heat pumps that lose efficiency having to heat or cool the air during extreme temperatures. The heat pump uses ground loop systems to move heat from the ground into the home to heat it and moves heat from the home into the ground to cool it.

The desuperheater makes hot water in both heating and cooling mode and does not affect the system’s ability to heat and cool, although the desuperheater cannot act as the main source of hot water, but instead makes hot water as a bonus.
