What is the difference between a window unit and a package unit?

Window air conditioner and portable air conditioner designs work well to cool a small space. While both house all the necessary components in a single unit, packaged HVAC systems feature a much larger design and can heat or cool entire homes. Additionally, packaged units typically install outside on a roof or near the building and connect to ductwork to distribute conditioned air. Window units do not require ductwork.

Fun fact: the BTUs of a product act as a unit of measure for energy. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It measures the amount of energy required to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

How does a heat pump work?

A split heat pump system, like an air conditioner split system, uses a refrigerant process to heat or cool your home or building.

  • To provide cool air, the indoor unit, the indoor air handler, must pull in warm air and pass it over the evaporator coil. The refrigerant changes from a liquid into a gas. The gas then absorbs the heat from the air and the indoor unit can distribute the now cool air into the room.
  • The refrigerant carries that heat energy to the outdoor unit where the compressor coil condenses the refrigerant back into a liquid, releasing the heat. The outdoor unit dispenses that heat outdoors.
  • In heating mode, this process reverses to provide hot air.

MRCOOL boasts energy efficiency for their Signature series heat pumps, providing up to a 15 SEER rating and 8.5 HSPF rating.
