What is a BR bulb?

A bulged reflector (BR) bulb describes the shape of the light bulb. A BR bulb allows for a wide beam angle with use of an internal reflector. The BR bulb gives a typical beam angle of 120°. BR bulbs are used when a broad pattern of ambient light is needed, such as a hallway light or a kitchen light.

What is beam angle?

Beam angle describes the spread of the light from a bulb. Angles vary from narrow spot angles to wide flood angles.

The beam angle of an LED bulb is the angular dimension of the cone of light from the lamp. It encompasses the central part of the beam out to the angle where the intensity is 50 percent of maximum.

The beam angle of an LED bulb

For most household ceiling fitted applications, a beam angle of 30 or 40 degrees would be sufficient. For outdoor applications, a wider beam angle of 60 to 120 degrees is preferred to cover a larger surface area.

What does the number after “BR” mean?

The number following “BR” indicates the diameter of the bulb in 1/8 of an inch.

  • BR20= 2.5 inches
  • BR30= 3.75 inches
  • BR40= 5 inches

What is the difference between BR and PAR bulbs?

BR lamps have a bulged bulb and project a wider beam of light. PAR (parabolic aluminized reflector) lamps have a flatter bulb and produce a narrower beam of light.
