What is a bulkhead light?

Bulkhead wall lights are a type of weather resistant outdoor fixture that provides functional illumination to exterior locations.

These lights are characterized by their casing design, which consists of sectioned metal caging that protects a glass or Polysynthetic dome.

Nuvo bulkhead wall lights are designed with either aluminum or die cast aluminum to provide additional durability against harsh environments.

How do bulkhead outdoor wall lights differ from other standard outdoor light fixtures?

The key difference between bulkhead lighting and standard outdoor lighting refers to its design, construction and durability:

  • Bulkhead lights contain rugged construction and a sealed gasketed design that prevents water, dust and other elements from damaging the fixture.
  • Standard outdoor lighting structures are made with either metal, plastic or glass and typically do not have the same level of weather resistance that a bulkhead light would offer.
  • Bulkhead light fixtures provide ambience and specialize in diffusing light to maximize illumination production over a large area
  • Other various standard outdoor lighting systems are utilized for ambience and directional lighting.

Nuvo outdoor bulkhead lights have adjustable dim controls that allow customization of light flow throughout the day.

What is the difference between aluminum and die cast aluminum?

Aluminum and die cast aluminum differ in the material used to cast the metal.

Die-cast aluminum forces raw materials into a mold under high pressure to form more detailed and stronger intricate shapes as seen with metal caging of bulkhead wall lights.

Regular aluminum casting involves pouring molten aluminum into a mold and leaving it to solidify.

Nuvo bulkhead light caging is cast in either aluminum or die cast aluminum, and comes in several different finishes including black, white and architectural bronze.

What are the main components of a bulkhead light?

In general, Nuvo bulkhead outdoor wall lights will consist of three components for assembly:

  • Canopy: the back panel of the light fixture that connects the inner wiring or bulb.
  • Glass or Polysynthetic shade: responsible for diffusing emitted light throughout space.
  • Cage: the outermost layer of the light that protects the inner workings from harsh elements and other debris.

Further installation depends on the type of bulkhead lighting acquired:

  • LED light fixtures will not require additional bulb installation.
  • Fluorescent and Incandescent models will require a separately purchased bulb for installation.

How to change bulb in bulkhead light?

For fluorescent and incandescent models that require bulb installation, the included assembly instructions advises that the metal shade and glass shade are removed to reveal the bulb socket:

  • Ensure that the power has been turned off before replacing your lightbulb.
  • Unscrew the mounting screws from the metal shade to access the glass shade.
  • Gently remove the glass shade from the wall plate, revealing the light bulb and socket.
  • Unscrew the old light bulb from the socket, and carefully screw in the new bulb.
  • Re-attach the glass shade, and screw on the metal shade with mounting screws.
