Where can I put a pendant light?

As long as you have the appropriate electrical wiring, you can use pendant lights in any room. Pendant lights come in many sizes and designs, including modern, classic, and rustic. This variety makes them great for any space. Popular locations include dining rooms, kitchens, foyers, living rooms, and bathrooms.

How do I install a hanging light?

Most household wiring is color-coded and corresponds with the instructions for pendant light installation. You will need to shut off the main power source and use a wire tester to ensure safety and to check that everything is functioning before you install. To avoid danger, it is best to hire an electrician.

Can I replace my current ceiling light with a pendant light?

Yes. Wiring for pendant lights and other ceiling lights are compatible, and you will not require new wiring.

Can I install a pendant light where there is currently no light fixture?

Yes, but this will be an expensive installation process. You will need an electrician to install a junction box in your ceiling and connect it to the electrical wiring of your home.

How large should my pendant light be?

  • For a room: Measure the length and width of the room in square feet. Add these numbers together and the sum will equal the desired diameter of the pendant light in inches. For instance, in a room that is 10 feet by 15 feet, the pendant light should be 25 inches in diameter
  • To hang over a table, counter, or bathtub: When coordinating a pendant light with another centerpiece, it is best to follow the 1/3 rule. The pendant light typically should be no more than 1/3 the size of the centerpiece. For example, if a dining room table is 12 feet long, the chandelier should be no more than 4 feet in diameter. Note that if you choose to hang multiple pendant lights, you need to make sure you have enough space between lights so they do not appear crowded.

How tall should my pendant light be?

The height of the pendant light and the length of its chain or cord will depend on each room and style. Here are a few guidelines for the most typical pendant light locations:

  • Foyer: Pendant lights are ideal for small foyers with low ceilings. Measuring from the bottom, the pendant light should hang 7 feet above the floor.
  • Dining room: Measuring from the bottom of the light fixture, the pendant light should be about five feet from the ground. You can also measure about 30 inches from the top of the table to the bottom of the light fixture to find the best height.
  • Kitchen: When hanging pendant lights over a kitchen island, leave about 30 inches of space between the countertop and the bottom of the light fixture.

What light bulbs do I need for my pendant light?

Size and shape of light bulbs will vary based on the light fixture. With that said, we highly recommend that you use LED light bulbs.

Most LEDs share the same base as incandescent bulbs and last for 10 times longer. This will reduce the need for light bulb changes.

You can determine the size of the bulb needed based on the letter and number labeled on the pendant light. Usually, household light bulbs are sized with an E12 or E26 base, and the majority of light fixtures are designed with this in mind.

How can I change the lighting aesthetic of my pendant light?

To control the light output, you can install a dimmer switch. A dimmer switch allows you to change the light intensity, perfect for dining rooms and living rooms. Dimmer switches also extend the life of light bulbs by reducing the energy flow to the power source. This will save money on electricity and reduce maintenance.
