How do you use a torque wrench?

Torque wrenches are used to tighten and adjust the nuts and bolts on pieces of equipment. These wrenches are commonly used to tighten and loosen lug nuts on an automobile.

  1. First, set the torque wrench to the right size for your lug nuts. We suggest looking at the owner's manual to look up the correct torque specifications.
  2. Fasten the wrench over the lug nuts
  3. Applying pressure on the torque wrench, loosen or tighten the bolts.

How does a torque wrench work?

A torque wrench is a hand tool used to apply force in order to loosen or tighten a lug nut or bolt. Torque literally means the amount of force times length. You could apply 20 pounds of pressure on the handle of a one foot torque wrench, and it would apply exactly 20 pounds of pressure to the fastener. The same force applied to a two foot long handle, would provide 40 pounds of torque to fasten the lug nut.
