What voltage heater should I install?

If you are looking to replace an existing electric baseboard heater with a 120 or 240 volt heater, make sure your electrical circuit breaker matches the power load of the heater.

  1. 120 volt heaters require a single pole circuit breaker
  2. 240 volt heaters require a double pole circuit breaker

How many watts do I need to heat up my space?

A great rule of thumb to consider when choosing baseboard heaters is to multiply the square foot of an area by at least 10 watts. It generally takes about 10 watts of energy to fully heat an area.

  • 10 watts of power produces about 34 BTU's of heat.
  • 100 watts of power produces about 341 BTU's of heat
  • 1000 watts of power produces about 3,412 BTU's of heat.

For example:

A 1,500 watt electric baseboard heater can produce about 51,00 BTU of heat. That is approximately 150 square feet of heated space. 1.500 watts/10 watts = 150 square feet
