Retrofit Shoebox Street Light Fixture to LED

Street lights have a responsibility to illuminate areas throughout the night whether the area is being used at that moment or not. Roadways and walkways need to be lit prior to a car coming around the corner or a jogger getting immersed in darkness.

It’s imperative to maximize your efficiency when dealing with lights that will be used for such a long amount of time. Longer life hours equal more nights of light. The LED Shoebox fixture gives you more light using less energy.

What Is a Shoebox Street Light Fixture?

A Shoebox is a light fixture that can be used for indoor and outdoor application. This includes: security lighting, street lighting, large parking areas, roadways, and parks. The Shoebox gets its name from its rectangular shape resembling that of an actual shoebox.

What Are My Options?

Replace the fixture

Replacing your current fixture with a new LED shoebox fixture is an excellent option. As with many things, there are positives and negatives to this option. The one main negative for replacing your fixture would be the startup cost for the project. LED Shoebox fixtures tend to cost more than the retrofit kits that are available. Though the startup cost is more than retrofitting, installing a new fixture wins in the battle of efficiency.

The replacement fixtures are designed to function with LED technology instead of being reconditioned to use LED technology like when you retrofit your fixture. If maintaining your current fixture's aesthetics is not a priority, then replacing the fixture is the way to go. You can find your wattage equivalent for replacing your current street light fixture.

Retrofit

The shoebox retrofit kit is the best option for retrofitting your current street fixture. It is designed to replace a less efficient lamp in a preexisting light fixture with a more efficient led lamp and driver. These kits are ideal for replacing Metal Halide (MH), High Pressure Sodium (HPS), and Mercury lamps.

Since the shoebox retrofit kit is designed to fit inside the previous fixture, you don’t have to worry about changing the aesthetics of the original model. Shoebox retrofit kits can also be used for indoor high bay lighting. Below you can find your street light fixture’s LED equivalent for your retrofitting project.

Common Application

LED Shoebox fixtures are ideal for outdoor application because they can withstand harsh weather and temperatures while simultaneously illuminating larger areas uniformly and efficiently. These lights are typically used commercially for area and street lighting.

This includes parking areas, parks, walkways, and roadways to name a few. Of the multiple light distribution types of area lighting our LED Shoebox fixtures are Type 3. This means that the light is cast outward and fills a large area as illustrated in the picture below.
