Downlights work as a type of recessed light. Also known as can lights, downlights install into the ceiling. Recessed lights, however, include fixtures that recess into a wall or floor. Recessed fixtures that were installed into the ground emit light upwards, giving off an uplighting effect. Fixtures that install into the wall may create a wall wash lighting effect by illuminating the opposite wall or the wall above or they may see use as step and stair lighting.

Downlights consist of two main pieces: the housing and the trim. The housing consists of the light source, mounting, and electrical components. The housing mounts into the ceiling and may come in one or two pieces. The housing can work in new construction, remodel, or retrofit situations.

• New construction housing features a design that works in locations with visible ceiling joists and without drywall, usually in new construction situations.
• Remodel housing features a slimmer design than new construction housing. They work well in areas without visible joists.
• Retrofit housing typically installs into existing housing, allowing you to easily change out the existing light source for a newer model.

Flush mount lighting attaches to the ceiling with no space between the bottom of the fixture and the ceiling. Recessed fixtures, however, install into the ceiling, wall, or ground.

Downlights typically recess mount into the ceiling. This means the electrical components install into the ceiling while the trim of the fixture sits flush against the ceiling, creating a sleek look.
