What is the difference between exit lights and emergency lights?
Exit lights, or exit signs, have the word ‘EXIT’ shown in either red or green letters. They install near doorways to let building occupants locate an exit. In the event of an emergency, they point the way to an egress route or a path out of the building.
Emergency lights consist of light fixtures that automatically turn on in case of a power outage, like when the normal electrical supply is interrupted or in the event of a fire or electrical failure. Using a battery or battery backup to supply power, they can help illuminate hallways or other pathways out of the building to guide occupants to safety.
How do emergency exit lights work?
Emergency lights and exit signs connect to the main power supply, but they also include a battery backup. If the power goes out, these fixtures switch over to the battery. This allows them to provide light even if the rest of the building is without power.
You can also find exit signs that rely on photoluminescence. They work by absorbing the light energy from surrounding light sources and releasing it over a certain period of time. This causes it to glow, effectively illuminating the sign.
After an emergency light is used, it needs time to recharge. Royal Pacific Lighting emergency lights require a recharge time of 48 hours after a 90-minute discharge.
How long do LED emergency lights work?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires that emergency lights operate for a minimum of 90 minutes or 1.5 hours. Royal Pacific Lighting offers LED emergency lights that allow for 90 minutes of illumination after a power failure.
Should emergency exit lights be on all the time?
OSHA requires that exit signs in occupied workspaces be illuminated from a reliable and external light source, typically the primary electrical supply for the building. Exit signs must be legible in both normal and emergency exit lighting modes. Additionally, they must be illuminated in a distinctive color.
What color should exit signs be?
In the United States, OSHA accepts any color or color combination that is distinctive or readily visible. However, some states require or recommend using one color over the other, so check local codes before choosing which one you need.
