A19 refers to the size and shape of the bulb. The A, which stands for ‘arbitrary,’ lets you know that it’s the upside-down pear shape. A-shaped bulbs are often the ones we think of when someone mentions the term ‘light bulb’ and is the most familiar light bulb shape.

The 19 indicates the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch. An A19 bulb has a diameter of 19/8 or around 2.375 inches.

E26 bases, also known as medium bases, are the most common base used in residential light fixtures. These are the easy screw bases you’re likely used to seeing. The E stands for ‘Edison’ or Edison screw base while the 26 measures the diameter of the base in millimeters.

Though they have a similar shape, LED A19 and A21 bulbs differ in size. An A19 measures around 2.375 inches in diameter while an A21 bulb has a slightly larger diameter of about 2.625 inches.

They’re often interchangeable as long as they have the same base. However, an A21 may not work in all applications that an A19 bulb can because it is slightly larger.

The difference between A21 and A23 bulbs is in their size. A21 bulbs are slightly smaller in diameter than A23 bulbs. A21 bulbs measure 21/8 or 2.625 inches while A23 measures 23/8 or 2.875 inches in diameter.
