LEDs for residential use often have a rated life between 15,000 to 35,000 hours, though some last even longer. Satco offers a wide range of bulbs, including many with a rated life of 15,000, 25,000, or 35,000 hours.
As long as it’s an outdoor rated bulb, you can use a smart light bulb outside. The outdoor rating makes it more durable and resistant to weather such as rain or wind.
You can find the rating in the product’s description or, if you have it in hand, it should be on the box.
You cannot use an indoor vanity light outdoors. Indoor fixtures cannot protect against wind, moisture, or water in the same way that an outdoor rated fixture can. Outdoor rated fixtures are more durable and can protect the electrical wiring from damage.
Check the IP rating and UL listing of the fixture. IP stands for Ingress Protection and tells you how much protection the fixture provides against the ingress of water, dirt, and dust. The IP rating has two numbers. The first number shows the degree of protection from solid particles while the second number indicates the degree of protection against liquids. For example, you might find an IP65 rating, which indicates a dustproof fixture that protects against splashing water.
A fixture may also say whether it is damp location rated or wet location rated. These UL listings depict the level of protection against water. Damp location rated fixtures can work in damp environments or areas that experience moisture, like an indoor pool, bathroom, or other similar area. Wet location rated fixtures can experience more water and may be resistant to standing water as well. They work in areas such as uncovered porches, outdoor walkways, and other similar areas.
If the fixture says dry location or does not say anything at all about damp or wet location, do not use it anywhere it may come in contact with moisture. These fixtures likely do not have a damp or wet location rating, meaning that the moisture can damage the fixture.
LEDs are the best bulbs for use outdoors. LEDs use less energy than incandescents, so you can leave them on for longer without worrying about them burning out or greatly increasing your energy bill. Because they last longer, it also means you don’t have to worry about replacing them as often.
Yes, if you plan to use light bulbs in outdoor fixtures, they should be outdoor rated. You cannot typically use indoor light bulbs for outdoor fixtures, and they won’t function as well when used outdoors. Outdoor bulbs are more versatile because they can usually be used both indoors and outdoors.
