What is a hearth rug?

Sparks and embers from a fireplace can damage your flooring and melt your carpet. They can even pose a fire risk. Unlike regular outdoor rugs or area rugs, hearth rugs protect floors from harmful heat, flying ash, embers, sparks, and cinders. A hearth rug, or fireplace rug, features fire-retardancy, and consists of materials which allows you to place them in front of your fireplace to protect the floor, carpet, and rest of your home from damage.

They may also feature a decorative design to add a touch of style to the area. Hearth rugs commonly come in half-moon or half-round shapes though they can also come in other styles as well. While providing protection, these rugs will accent a variety of rooms, like a living room, bedroom, or other area with a fireplace.

How do you choose a hearth rug?

A big aspect to consider when choosing a hearth rug, besides the appearance, is the material. Hearth rugs come in three common materials: wool, nylon, and fiberglass.

  • Wool - naturally resists burning. Wool rugs also feature a low flame spread rate. This means that, if an ember lands on a wool rug, it may char, but the fire self-extinguishes before it can spread further. It may leave a char mark, but these can often brush out, leaving the rug looking almost good-as-new.
  • Nylon - instead of starting on fire, nylon melts slowly when it encounters hot coals. This makes for a safe rug option. However, because they melt, they can pose the risk of damage to the floor beneath them. You can typically find nylon rugs available at a lower price than wool or fiberglass.
  • Fiberglass - usually the most expensive option. These rugs resist burning and melting so any ember that lands on them will burn out harmlessly. They often include a non-skid vinyl backing and you can typically clean these rugs with a sponge and warm, soapy water.

UniFlame rugs come in either nylon or wool.
